pxeboot bare metal

Assumption - Fedora system

Setting up dhcp server to assign IP to be in same network with bare metal machine where we will perform pxe install
$ sudo dnf install dhcp

## dhcp configuration
$ sudo cat <<EOF | sudo tee -a /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf

subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
authoritative;
default-lease-time 600;
max-lease-time 7200;
ddns-update-style none;
range 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.20;

option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.1;
option routers 192.168.1.1;

# Entries to point clients to their pxe bootloader
filename "pxelinux.0";

# entry to point clinet to the server that provides the pxe bootloader
next-server 192.168.1.1;

}

Set 192.168.1.1 static IP address for your system through network manager. Connect the server and client machine through lan so that they are in same network.
address - 192.168.1.1 , netmask - 255.255.255.0 , gateway - 0.0.0.0

Restart dhcpd service

$ sudo systemctl restart dhcpd

Mointoring dcpd journal log
$ sudo journalctl -fu dhcpd


# Setting up tftp-server
$ sudo dnf install tftp-server
$ sudo systemctl start tftp.socket

# Setting up PXE bootloader

Install syslinux-nonlinux package if not already available
$ sudo dnf install syslinux-nonlinux

Files to be served over tftp will be created in /var/lib/tftpboot/
Copy pxe bootloader related file
$ sudo cp /usr/share/syslinux/{pxelinux.0,vesamenu.c32,ldlinux.c32,libcom32.c32,libutil.c32} /var/lib/tftpboot/

Create directory /var/lib/tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg
$ sudo mkdir /var/lib/tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg

Configure client's bootloader contnet at /var/lib/tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/default

$ $ sudo cat <<EOF | sudo tee /var/lib/tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/default
DEFAULT vesamenu.c32
TIMEOUT 20
PROMPT 1
LABEL pxeboot

        KERNEL fedora-coreos-30.228-installer-kernel
        APPEND ip=dhcp rd.neednet=1 initrd=fedora-coreos-30.228-installer-initramfs.img coreos.inst=yes coreos.inst.install_dev=sda coreos.inst.image_url=http://192.168.1.102:8000/fedora-coreos-30.228-metal-bios.raw.gz coreos.inst.ignition_url=http://192.168.1.102:8000/fcos.ign
IPAPPEND 2
EOF


For local access, download metal-bios image and made them available locally. Wherever image and fcos.ign is available make it available over http using 
$ python3 -m http.server

Download vmlinuz_file and initramfs_file and keep it in /var/lib/tftpboot/




Libvirt efi boot
--------------------

get shim.efi


First destroy default libvirt config
$ sudo virsh net-destroy default

In virsh edit the default config

$ sudo virsh net-edit default

  <ip address='192.168.122.1' netmask='255.255.255.0'>
    <tftp root='/var/lib/tftpboot/'/>
    <dhcp>
      <range start='192.168.122.2' end='192.168.122.254'/>
      <bootp file='shim.efi'/>
    </dhcp>




After making changes, run:
$ sudo virsh net-start default


In /var/lib/tftpboot make all related files available


$ sudo cat <<EOF | sudo tee grub.cfg
set default="0"
set timeout=0

menuentry 'Install Fedora CoreOS' {
        linuxefi fedora-coreos-30.229-installer-kernel ip=dhcp rd.neednet=1 console=ttyS0 coreos.inst=yes coreos.inst.install_dev=sda coreos.inst.image_url=http://192.168.122.1:8000/fedora-coreos-30.229-metal-uefi.raw.gz coreos.inst.ignition_url=http://192.168.122.1:8000/fcos.ign
        initrdefi fedora-coreos-30.229-installer-initramfs.img

Run fllowing to start installation
----------------------------------------

$ sudo virt-install --pxe --network default  --name pxe1 --memory 2048 --disk size=10 --nographics --boot uefi
